In my name
Home » Blog » Annabel McAleer » In my nameIs Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am the new Bono? Do we really need a new Bono? Do those full stops make him cool or is it the hair?
Popstar activist Will.i.am released a new single last week. To be honest, the track itself is pretty lame, but the concept is worth a listen.
Watch the extended, explanatory version here.
The idea is that we join Will.i.am (without the full stops he's just some nerdy guy) and his corral of celebrity friends (Scarlett Johansson Bingo, anyone?) in a global chorus of names demanding that world governments honour the Millenium Development Goals they agreed to in 2000.
These are the eight goals:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
And here's Will.i.am's average new single:
If it looks and sounds familiar, maybe it's because you've seen his Vote Barack campaign song:
A lot of the same famous faces pop in both videos, and a few of the guys from the 'don't vote' video have done the trifecta (spot the Scarlett!). I didn't see Bono, Chris Martin or Gwyneth pop up once. Is this the new generation of do-gooders? Or were the celebrity bits of all these videos filmed on the same day?
