It's nearly Movember

Women, brace yourselves for a sharp increase in the number of mustachioed males around the country … Movember is nearly upon us.

Men, register on www.movember.com ... and enjoy that smooth upper lip while you can. You might want to research the type of mo you want to go for:

And give generously. Half the funds raised will go to the Cancer Society of New Zealand to fund prostate cancer research and support services, and the other half will go to the New Zealand Mental Health Foundation’s ‘Out of The Blue’ campaign to help men experiencing depression.

Last year, 26,484 Kiwi men took part, raising over $2 million.

Founding Movember Mo Bro Jim Slattery says Movember  in New Zealand has become a case study for the rest of the world, and he credits Kiwis with helping to make Movember a success on a global scale.

“Last year there were enough Kiwi's participating to almost fill Mt Smart Stadium (26,000) which was amazing. Registrations and funds raised have more than doubled year on year so the challenge is on for New Zealand to get behind it and go for the number one global Mo ranking again”.

I, along with many men of my stature and manliness, refuse to participate in this nonsense. I can grow a fine set of mutton chops and given time can produce hair in most nooks and cranies of my face. But my upper lip remains mysteriously sparse of prickly stuff.

To provide an honourable alternative for men of my condition I am running a parallel campaign with the ingenious title: No-vember.

No-vember participants can raise funds for whatever charity they want. I suggest bankers and stock brokers are in dire need this year. Let's give generously - join No-vember today.

Having a moan to an MP is not only cathartic, it's effective. But it's just as important to let politicians know you support them when they done good. Sometimes they even write back!

Plus: Peak oil is really real, says everyone.

Intrepid Volunteers Challenge
GoMad

To celebrate and support New Zealand’s volunteers, Good magazine and Intrepid Travel have created the Intrepid Volunteers Challenge (gomad.co.nz) and social networking site, so charities and volunteers like you can connect and bring change.

The big idea is simply to reward our unsung heroes and make it easier for new volunteers to find a project that suits them. The Intrepid Volunteer of the Year will win a $5,000, all-expenses-paid Intrepid Travel volunteering holiday to any destination in the world, with spending money from Good magazine.
