Diary of my detox: the beginning

Home » Blog » Diary of my detox: the beginning

Good subscription manager Jen Livingstone is back at work after a three-month trip around India and Europe. Keen to clear up her Delhi belly, she signs up to test-drive the latest detox kit to arrive in the office.

After four months of being ravaged with giardia and gastro bugs in India, then being poisoned with vast amounts of alcohol and junk food throughout Europe, it is about time to be a little kinder to my insides.

Now I'm back home I have decided that my body needs a break—it also wouldn’t hurt if I could shed a few of those European kilos that seem to have hung about!

So there’s my motivation for volunteering to test the Quick Cleanse 15 Day Detox Programme when it arrived in the office. It's pretty simple really: basically just a vegan diet with lots of beans, sprouts lentils etc, no caffeine, no sugar, no alcohol (eek … no wine!) and if you’re a smoker then no smoking. The diet is partnered with a selection of supplements that are taken before and after meals.

I must say it took me a few weekends to drum up the courage to start—15 days is a long time, and at the ripe old age of 23 ("That’s two weekends!" exclaims my horrified partner) there is always a reason why you shouldn’t be detoxing on this Saturday or the other. But Sunday's particularly potent hangover was motivation enough for me; this is the week to start!

So I headed off to my local shopping centre to stock up on organic produce, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, soy milk and of course the precious sprouts. Preparation is key—ill-prepared and I will be stuffing myself with inappropriate foods in no time.

I am now on day two and it is going great. Contrary to  popular belief, I have not needed to set up an office in the loo and I am not starving. I am not a huge meat eater; so far it is just dairy products I am missing—yogurt is so much tastier than soy milk in the morning! According to the information, it’s days two to four that will be the killers, so maybe my date with the bathroom is looming … we will just have to wait and see.
