Home » Blog » Hazel Murray » Dargaville Girl Guides embark on world record attemptThe Dargaville Girl Guides are attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest ever chain of bras—and they're on track to beat the the Australian record of 166,000 bras by November.
The Dargaville Girl Guides have received tremendous support for their record attempt which aims to raise awareness of breast cancer, as well as make charitable donations to poor nations.
Already there are 19,899 bras in storage around the country which will be strung end to end and counted this November. At present the record is held by a group in Bundaberg, Australia who made a 163 kilometre chain of bras. New Zealand has attempted to break the record in previous years, but without success.
Around 2,500 New Zealand women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and as a girl's organisation, Girl Guiding New Zealand felt it was important to help raise awareness for this common disease. The organisation also said that the exercise was important for young girls to realise that there are millions of women in world who are less fortunate than them, and that a simple item such as a bra, is a luxury.
Postie and Sky TV have got behind the effort to raise awareness and collect bras for the world record attempt. Seventy-nine Postie stores around the country have become collection points, and donators will receive a $5 discount off new bra purchases in the store.
So with 180,101 bras to go, in just over four months, the Guides have a lot of collecting to do.
