In an effort to promote a sustainable way of life for ordinary families, the Kapiti Coast District Council is holding a Greenest Streets competition.
Each street is judged on how much the participating families reduce their footprint and the size of the street's average footprint at the end of the competition in nine months time.
The panel of five judges are drawn from community and green representatives from around the district, and includes Fair Go's Kevin Milne and Mayor Jenny Rowan.
Rowan says the competition is about "everyday people taking practical action for the environment".
This sounds like a really fun and engaging way to promote environmental living. Props to the Kapiti Coast District Council for coming up with the plan and hopefully we'll see it spreading to other areas soon.
Around 14 households are participating in the competition. The four streets competing are Avion Terrace in Raumati Beach, Kakariki Street (also comprising households on Tilley Rd, Te Miti St and Haumia St) in Paekākāriki, Rainbow Court in Raumati South and Te Roto Road in Ōtaki.
