The latest Frocks on Bikes event was a fabulous cycle-centric evening of gorgeous bicycles, fabulous fashion and this season’s to-die-for (but not on the road thanks) cycle accessories.

Gorgeous spotty frocks, flower festooned baskets, red leather riding gloves … Frocks on Bikes has enough panache, sultry undertones and well-cut coats for a Sophia Loren movie. Bikes are a fashionista’s dream, say the enthusiasts. Hiding in a car, no one can see you or your frocks—but on a bike, your fabulousness is plain to see.

What better reason do you need to dress in your best and discover the joys of stylish cycling? You don’t—says Pippa Coom, Miranda Brown, Dalston and Derny, HB’s own super-cyclist Su Yin and the 400-plus crowd who squeezed into Shed 1 down at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour the other night. (For one thing, heels help you get a good grip on the pedals!)

Cycle in style attractions included:

  • Test rides on a wide range of stylish gents and ladies bicycles
  • The low down on biking beautifully with the Cycle Style Fashion Show (featuring local fashion designers, bicycle retailers and street style)
  • A chance to meet  and get cycling tips from experienced cycle divas and dudes, and talk to the experts about winter cycling in style
  • Valet bicycle parking and free maintenance checks, plus loads of prizes, including a bicycle friendly spot prize, best dressed an ‘On Ya Bike’ draw and more

The feeling of the night was summed up by Dominique Crikemans who I met pulling out of the viaduct with her fabulous new road bike: “I used to ride in lycra, but never again!”

Thanks to your website I was alerted to the Cycle Style event, went along and was totally inspired by the bike and people fashion. Am seriously thinking of getting an upright city bike to keep my MTB company! Looking forward to the next event - perhaps for spring/summer?

Thanks guys for a really nice article. It was an amazing event and it really took on a life of it's own as more people got involved and the word spread - we actually sold out, which is pretty cool for a mid winter event in a very large venue! Once we catch our breath, we might think about doing it again.

Thanks for the nice picture of me - any chance I could get a copy?

Kia ora !
I've been maintaining a page with links to ( as many as I know of )  importers and retailers of European style urban-appropriate utility bicycles in New Zealand since early 2007.
The list is starting to grow quite quickly.

Can I just add that it was the cycling article in the most recent issue of Good that finally made up my mind about getting back on a bicycle, and I'm loving it! I forgot how much I missed the peace and slower speed of a bike, the wind in my face and yes, even the burn in my thighs. I'd encourage anyone to go for it.

Hooray, that's awesome Paulette!

For what it's worth, I was hurting for a few days too when I first got back on the bike :)
