Wellington-based clothing company Kowtow makes garments that are 100 percent fair trade and organic. Its new tote is constructed from recycled t-shirts, coffee sacks and scrap fabric.
Kowtow Director Gosia Piatek says she created the bags to show how waste can be transformed. “There is often a lot of waste from the fashion industry and we really wanted to show how a bit of creativity could take that waste and turn it into something both beautiful and functional,"she says.
“The outer of the bag is constructed from t-shirts from our own range that had been stitched incorrectly. We didn't want to throw them on the scrap heap so we transformed them into something else entirely.
“Each bag is trimmed with fabric cut from a coffee sack, adding a unique element and texture. The coffee sacks come from People’s Coffee, a fair trade coffee roaster that has a cult following in Wellington.”
There are four prints to chose from and the bags are available from Kowtow stockists around the country.
