How do glam two-wheelin' ladies welcome spring? Why, with a Frocks on Bikes parade of course

It’s entirely my own fault that I missed the first Frocks on Bikes Auckland event in December last year: I had not yet bought a bike.

I am also to blame for skipping the BikeWise breakfast later that summer: I was geeking out at Webstock.

Cycling events of the non-lycra type are hard to come by in Auckland (or anywhere in New Zealand as a general rule). But Frocks on Bikes is back again and yay, there is much rejoicing by the people. Okay, me.

Fashion tragedy from the 80s

Fashion tragedy

The idea behind Frocks on Bikes is to free us from the tyranny of lycra tights and reflective vests. Just because it’s your chosen mode of transportation shouldn’t mean that you have to look like a fashion tragedy from the 80s.

So all you stylish ladies (and gentlemen) pencil in this date in your calendars. And if you don't own a bicycle already, go beg, borrow or rent one from Velorbis on the day.

Date: September 12, 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 10am
Venue: Western Park

There are also a similar events planned for Wellington and Christchurch on October 24 as part of 350 Aotearoa events.

I hasten to add: Frocks On Bikes isn't anti-lycra.  Bike shorts are actually the key to being able to wear gorgeous circle skirts (and anything chiffon) in the Great Outdoors without having to worry about flashing your undies.

Frocks On Bikes' declaration to the women of Aotearoa is that anything in your wardrobe is cycle wear!  if you rock the 1980s glam - they were Madonna's formative years, after all - good on you.  If you prefer broderie anglaise and strappy sandals, good on you.

Frock on!

I go for the more European approach, just buy some nice underwear and live a little!

I'm keen on joining but worried my lovely 50s skirt will get caught in my spokes. Any tips on spokes-skirt skirmishes?

@Margaret: What you need is a skirt guard. Here are some instructions to make one.
