Eco-chic in the Capital

Ohtel is true urban chic with a good dollop of Kiwiana

STAY…

at the Ohtel (66 Oriental Parade). This is true urban chic with a good dollop of Kiwiana. Every room is kitted out with mid-century modern furniture mixed with New Zealand art and design. Solar hot water heating, recycling bins and a strong, local menu completes its eco-cred.

SHOP…

at Commonsense Organics (260 Wakefield Street). Everything an organic foodie could salivate over. The shop showcases the best of both local and organic produce and is a meeting point for the like-minded. Friendly staff steer you towards the juiciest seasonal delights and advise on new goodies.

VISIT…

the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary (Waiapu Road, Karori). Look up, listen, and you’ll spy kaka, tui, saddlebacks, hihi, bellbirds and more. On a sunny day, the tuatara might be out; go at night, and you might spot a kiwi. It feels like a world all its own—only 2km from the centre of the city.

WEAR…

Starfish (128 Willis Street). Sustainable fashion has never looked so good. Owner Laurie Foon mixes her own award-winning designs with other well known labels. Recycled rubber shoes share space with merino dresses. Looking to clear your conscience and your bank account? Spend the afternoon here.

EAT…

at Maria Pia (55–57 Mulgrave Street, Thorndon). This small trattoria has a big personality and an even bigger waiting list. Owners Maria and hubby Richard Klein were founders of the local Slow Food chapter. Pop in for fresh pasta and a taste of how food used to be.
