Trust a Kiwi to come up with the ultimate travel vehicle. The new Spaceship camper van has all the luxury of a people mover, all the gadgets of a traditional motor home, and is now available in a hybrid version, cutting your petrol consumption by one-third.
“It functions a bit like a Swiss Army knife,” says Neil. “Everything can be put away. The water supply is stored in the bed. The cooker folds away and the bed extends out the back”
Spaceship executive director Neil Geddes came up with the idea after driving a Volkswagen Kombi van through Europe. Unlike an unwieldy motor home, the Kombi was both good to drive and good to sleep in. He set his mind to creating a modern version, and customised a Toyota Previa to fit the brief. He now brings in late model Previas from Japan, all of them pre-loved family wagons just a few years old, and the interiors are re-fitted in Christchurch to optimise space.
The Spaceship boasts everything you could want from a travelling vehicle: cooker, fridge, double bed, even a DVD
player.
“It functions a bit like a Swiss Army knife,” says Neil. “Everything can be put away. The water supply is stored in the bed. The cooker folds away and the bed extends out the back.”
Of course, you don’t have to use the DVD player. You could
do the old-fashioned thing and look at the stars instead. But it’s there in case of clouds—and it plays MP3 CDs, too. (You can also plug your iPod into the car stereo.)
You can’t buy your own Spaceship, but you can rent one from Auckland or Christchurch, for between $40 and $129 per day, depending on the season. For details and a quote, head to www.spaceships.tv.
