Action for Environment (AE)

A Wellington based environmental organisation who work alongside community groups and individuals, constructing submissions regarding the environment for local and Central Governments.. 

AE advocates for combating pollution, global warming and destructive development and have a special interest in safeguarding the Queen’s Chain, the Town Belt and wild open spaces.

Climate Defence Network (CDN)
Nationwide
An alliance of diverse groups from transport, environment, medical, engineering and resource management who combine their collective expertise to promote policies and actions that positively support the environment and fight polluters in New Zealand. Members include: Greenpeace, Pacific Institute of Resource Management (PIRM), Engineers for Social Responsibility, Sustainable Energy Forum, Oxfam, Forest and Bird Society and the Public Health Association. Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand (ECO)
Nationwide
Founded in 1971 as Co En Co before a name change in 1976, ECO is a non-profit network of 70 conservation organisations whose diversity range from international groups like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth to smaller grass-root clubs like the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust, the National Council of Women and the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand.

ECO campaigns for the protection of native forests, lakes and rivers and is at the forefront of environmental campaigns on fisheries, transport and environmental management.

The team is largely made up of volunteers, supported by a small office and resource centre in Wellington.

Earth — Organics, Forests & Farming


Bush Telly The NZ Conservation Channel

Established as a Trust, Bush Telly is New Zealand’s Natural History Media Unit, set up to design programmes in support of science and conservation. The group’s mission is to encourage viewers to get to know and understand New Zealand’s natural history and learn new ways on how they can be more effective with environmental protection. The films are free to view for the general public.

Native Forest Network (NFN)
Nationwide
NFN’s purpose is to protect the world’s native forests and the integrity of the ecosystems of animals, plant life and culture of the indigenous peoples who dwell within. The organisation’s members are made up of conservation biologists, forest activists, indigenous people and non-governmental groups.

NZ Native Forests Restoration Trust
Nationwide
New Zealand’s leading organisation in forest restoration, whose mission is to acquire land for the purpose of returning the earth and waterways back to their natural habitat for the protection of important species. Since 1980, when the Trust was found, the group has restored and maintained 25 North Island reserves, a land mass of nearly 6,000ha of protected native forests.

Soil & Health Association of NZ Inc

A large membership organisation whose purpose is to promote organic production methods and to support research into organics and initiatives to stop the use of unnecessary chemicals especially pesticides. The group also campaigns to keep food and farming free from genetic engineering and provides natural organic information to growers and consumers with their magazine, Organic NZ.

With 100 countries and five million supporters, WWF NZ is part of one of the largest eco-organisations worldwide with a wealth of conservation experience dating back to the group’s birth in 1961. The group’s mission is to build a future where people live in harmony with the earth and halt the process of environmental degradation.

WWF NZ has campaigned for the protection of New Zealand’s Hector dolphins, raised awareness of climate change with Earth Hour and advocates for the protection of our natural wildlife.

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF NZ)

Zero Waste New Zealand

For nearly 10 years, the charitable organisation Zero Waste has influenced New Zealand companies and individuals to view rubbish as a resource and worked with business owners and staff to help source new ways of minimising rubbish, making business’ more sustainable.  Examples of some work methods are; waste audits; planning and developing sustainable housing; staff restructuring and the production of waste manuals.

An online waste exchange organisation offering an alternative to dumping reusable items in a landfill.
