Behind-the-scenes

The styles behind Good’s latest cover shoot!

By Carolyn Enting

Capturing the right feeling for each issue of Good is always a wonderful production and collaboration. A bringing together of a fabulous team of specialists to create magic that we hope will inspire and make our readers feel good too.

Our latest issue celebrates style heroes who are changing the face of fashion and we wanted the cover to reflect that so Good editor Carolyn Enting brought together a selection garments and accessories from the latest autumn/winter 2019 collections that fit with Good’s ethos – Kowtow, WE-AR, Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Mina and Ingrid Starnes just to name a few.

We always try and shoot up to six looks and while we each have our personal favourite outfit combination, we never know what will be on the cover until we have the images and tried out different options with our masthead and coverlines.

For issue 64, our current issue, we had 12 amazing cover options to choose from but whittled it down to the stunning image of model Isbabelle Steinmann from Red 11 Management wearing a gorgeous Sylvester ‘Botancials’ dress by Kate Sylvester and stunning LeeLi Design ‘Threads of Nature collection Pink Enigma embroidered earrings from vintage clothing store Painted Bird (main image).

Mina ‘Moi’ jumpsuit, $359, and LeeLi Design earrings, $169, from Painted Bird. Bag stylist’s own.

Accessories are also a key part of any shoot and we just loved these statement earrings handmade to order for Painted Bird which stocks premium handpicked vintage clothing in Mildford, Auckland. These embroidered earrings are from a limited-edition collection ‘Threads of Nature’. And they look great paired with this red jumpsuit by Mina.

Each year H&M releases a Conscious Exclusive collection made from eco-conscious materials that range from organic cotton to recycled polyester. We fell in love with this gown from the latest H&M Conscious Exclusive collection. Our shoot location was the summit of Mt Albert, just a five minute drive from Good HQ and the day so hot – 30 degrees!

H&M Conscious Exclusive gown, $299.

It was fun bringing together two of our favourite ethical labels WE-AR and Kowtow for this fun outfit. Organic cotton mixing with linen in a bold burst of flower power.

Kowtow ‘Rainbow’ long sleeve top and WE-AR ‘Artista’ linen overalls.

This was another one of our favourite combinations. Karen Walker ‘Serpent’ blouse, Kowtow denim skirt and H&M Conscious Exclusive bracelet. In the late afternoon light on the day of our shoot, Isabelle just glowed. Though in reality in the 30 degree heat she was melting but looking at this shot you’d never know!

Karen Walker ‘Serpent’ blouse, $415, Kowtow ‘Button Up’ skirt, $249, and H&M Conscious Exclusive bracelet, $40.

Ingrid Starnes is always on our hit list for garments. We absolutely love what she does. One of her dresses graced the cover of Good three years ago and it was also a contender for our autumn issue.
