Podcast with Wildlife Hospital Dunedin founder

Wildlife Hospital Dunedin founder Dr Lisa Argilla talks to Good editor about her passion for saving wildlife, especially the rare yellow-eyed penguin.

Interview by Carolyn Enting

Sixty-nine yellow-eyed penguins have been treated by Wildlife Hospital Dunedin since becoming operational in January 2018. Of that number 92 per cent were saved and 45 per cent breeding penguins, which is significant for this endangered bird (there are only 260 breeding pairs left in the South Island).

Being chosen as an AMP ‘Dare to Dream’ Scholarship recipient in 2016 helped Dr Lisa Argilla to open the first specialised Wildlife Hospital in the lower South Island of New Zealand. Prior to that injured wildlife was flown to Wellington or Palmerston North for treatment.

Argilla was a guest of honour at the recent AMP Scholarship 20 Year celebration held at The Sugar Club, Sky Tower, Auckland where she spoke to Good editor Carolyn Enting about the great work of the Wildlife Hospital based at Otago Polytechnic which has admitted 260 patients in the first six months.
