Fabric artist

After Lisa Baudry’s dreamy ‘Paradise’ print featured in Good magazine it ended up becoming wallpaper, proving it’s not only the team at Good who love her work.

Interview by Carolyn Enting

A multi-disciplinary artist, Lisa Baudry’s original, hand-crafted prints and patterns often make their way onto cloth, working beautifully on home furnishings as well as apparel.

Baudry is also one of four talented artists to feature on the cover of Good magazine’s 10th birthday issue, joining fellow leading contemporary New Zealand artists Hayley ‘Flox’ King, Hannah Jensen and Anieszka Banks.

If you had to describe your style of work to a stranger without showing them your work, how would you describe it?

My editorial illustration style is mostly layered painterly collage with black ink or pencil line-work. My patterns are often bold and predominantly but not exclusively florals or botanical inspired.

What inspires you most in your work?

The process of mastery over my craft is a long and complex one. I love that it’s always challenging and gives me a life full of learning and discovery.

We asked Lisa Baudry, along with her fellow Good magazine issue 61 cover stars and artists Flox, Anieszka Banks and Hannah Jensen what the inspirations were behind their bespoke ‘life is good’ illustrations for the celebrations issue of Good

For Good magazine’s 10th birthday issue you created an illustration to the brief ‘life is good’. Can you explain more about this particular illustration and how that informed this work?

I felt as though that statement isn’t always a given for me and I’m sure for many other people. I need to build a life based on working towards that feeling, and to do so, I actively build good things, people and experiences into my life. I need to be active in my appreciation of them in order to feel good.

Life is Good by Lisa Baudry

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Probably when I was at Brownies doing my artist badge! But I knew nothing about being an artist. I didn’t know any artists and I hadn’t seen much art. Children’s picture books were the only art I’d seen, the ones through Lucky Book club and what was in our tiny school library.

What was your first memorable artistic memory?

We didn’t do much drawing at school but I remember when I was about 6 or 7 drawing a mouse that someone was riding like a horse. I loved the feeling of creating something from nothing on the page. It felt like magic.

Can you share one of your career highlights to date?

Getting my first home decor products into stores this year with Bolt of Cloth (Wilderness Cushion Collection).

Lisa Baudry’s ‘Paradise’ print which is now also a beautiful wallpaper.

What types of commissions do you enjoy the most?

Any commission where people value my work! I especially love doing portraits on commission.

What is your happy place?

I have many! In front of a Wes Anderson film, in my studio, playing indoor netball with my mates.

What medium do you mostly/prefer to work with, and why?

Collage and black ink. I like the gradation of tone I can get with ink, and it’s also perfect for scanning into digital art and then colouring with my software. I work up a lot of painterly textures and keep them in files by colour. I use them for my collage so that you can see brushstrokes in the final piece and so that the colour remains subtle.

What do you hope people get from your work?

An escape from the ordinary, boring and mundane. I hope my work expresses feelings and experiences that others can recognise and feel. I’d love it to connect people with what is beautiful in nature and in life.
