Art for animals in need

If you love animals, and you love art, here’s an exhibition to know about that will support the safe haven of animals rescued from abuse and neglect.

‘Holy Cow’ by artist Paul Hartigan

Animal advocacy group Direct Animal Action are hosting an art exhibition and auction to raise funds for Raglan-based animal sanctuary Paws Awhile – who provide a safe haven to animals rescued from abuse and neglect. Owner Anna Dahlberg self-funds the sanctuary which is home to a variety of animals including dogs, cats, highland cattle, donkeys and kunekune pigs.

The art exhibition opens next week in Auckland at Allpress Studio but online bidding kicks off this Friday (November 25) for anyone who wants to purchase an artwork.

Over 30 established and emerging New Zealand artists feature in the auction including local Raglan artist Tina Wessling, as well as Flox, Jeff Thomson, Paul Walsh, Peter Miller, Misery and Mary McIntyre.

“I donated my artwork to say thank you to Anna from Paws Awhile for her selfless engagement for animals and to help raise money for her sanctuary,” says Wessling.

Says Dahlberg, “I’d like to thank all the artists and everyone who’s given their precious time and amazing artwork to help. The artworks contributed really send the message that animals are sentient beings; a philosophy that I work to put into action at Paws Awhile.”

The exhibition runs from Tuesday November 29 – Thursday December 1 at Allpress Studio, Browns Mill Building, 8 Drake Street, Freemans Bay, Auckland. A live auction will take place on closing night from 5.30-8pm.  For more, visit www.seeingthesentientbeing.com
