Baking a difference for Starship one muffin at a time

New Zealand’s national children’s hospital, Starship, sees around 130,000 patients each year, one of them being Eloise McFadden who Starship has saved the life of three times.

Words Emily Wilton

Eloise was only three weeks old when her family rushed her to Starship and were told of her complex heart condition. This led to the first of many open heart surgeries five short weeks later. She has had a longer stay at Starship than some and has spent more than six months of her life in the hospital.

Kiwis can help support Starship Hospital by joining in the Bake It Better fundraiser to raise money to help many more children like Eloise get better and return home to their families.

Eloise and her sister Caitlin are baking fanatics and are ambassadors of the Bake It Better fundraiser for Starship’s month of July bake sales. Caitlin will be baking her classic blueberry muffins to help raise money as a way to thank the hospital staff for saving her little sister’s life so many times.

“We are proud to be involved and give back to Starship, they have done so much for us. Without the expert care we’ve received, Eloise would not be here,” Nadia McFadden, the mother of the two girls, says.

“Starship is a home away from home, a place where Eloise feels very comfortable. Despite having spent so much time in hospital, Eloise is still able to thrive.”

This fundraiser is to be one of many with a determined aspiration goal to generate $20 million a year for the hospital by 2023. You can get involved by baking sweet, salty or healthy treats and selling them throughout your neighbourhood whether at school, work, local clubs or businesses.
