The Cancer Society’s Margaret Stewart House in Wellington has launched a fundraising appeal to pay for solar panels that will generate predicted savings on power bills of $300,000 over the next 25 years.

The organisation has just launched its ‘Power Up The Cancer Society’ campaign, which will culminate in a state-of-the-art solar power system installed at Margaret Stewart House on the grounds of Wellington Hospital.

Solar company Solar King will fit Margaret Stewart House out with 116 new solar panels. It will cost $70,000 to cover all costs, $9,000 of which has been raised so far.

The Margaret Stewart House is a home away from home for hundreds of cancer patients and their families every year who travel from out of town. The savings that will come in the years that follow will be spent on providing even greater services and amenities within the residence.

Cancer Society Wellington Chief Executive Mike Smith says that the organisation is excited about the savings that can be made from switching to solar energy.

“We hope the community will rally and help us slash our current power bills and free up money that can be channeled into core activities that have a direct and positive impact on people going through cancer,” says Mr Smith.

Donations both big and small are welcomed. Solar King has reduced each solar panel to $600 each, encouraging businesses and individuals to purchase one and be recognised for it.
