Good: Can you describe your role at movementLAB? How long have you been studio manager and principle instructor?
Penny Metcalfe: I started both roles in December 2018. My primary role at movementLAB is to oversee the pilates side of the business, which encompasses managing staff, organising the timetable and client care. As principle instructor I run group classes and private lessons.
What do you enjoy most about sharing your passion for pilates?
I’ve always known the benefits of health and movement myself, but as an instructor I really enjoy seeing my clients improve their own strength and mobility whilst enjoying themselves. Pilates is a very safe form of exercise so it can be used for rehab, during pregnancy and as a complimentary foundation for all other forms of fitness and sport, reducing the incidence of injury.
Do you have a favourite class to teach? Which one and why?
I love teaching Reformer Pilates as it's such a versatile piece of equipment. Once mastered it's very effective for participants, and as an instructor I enjoy creating new exercise combinations with it.
There’s a heavy focus on ensuring instructors at movementLAB are equipped with the latest evidence-based research. Can you explain why this is very important, and how do you stay in the know?
Physiotherapy is the principle side of movementLAB, and often clients will progress across to pilates. As instructors, it's essential we understand their unique circumstances and design programmes appropriate to them. We support our instructors by providing regular in-service catch-ups, and our staff actively seek continuing education, but you’d be surprised what new tips and tricks you can learn from the pilates community on Instagram!
For people who’ve never been to a pilates class before, which class do you advise they start with?
A one-on-one appointment is essential to learn the basics of pilates. There’s more to it than first meets the eye, and you can then progress into foundation group classes and move on to become a pilates pro!
What piece of advice would you give people wanting to get more movement into their life?
We are increasingly stuck on our chairs and our devices. Switch it off, get up and integrate more movement into your daily life. Use your lunch hour to come to movementLAB!
