How to keep your food fresher for longer

Celebrate the start of the crisp days of Spring with some tips to reduce food waste and keep your food fresher (and crisper) for longer with New World.

Food waste is a major issue in New Zealand, with each Kiwi household throwing out approximately 70kg of edible food each year. This adds up to more than $500 per year, so it’s about time we all did our bit to help reduce, ruse and recycle. Small changes can make a big difference.

One way of doing so is reducing or avoiding food waste altogether. The newest food storage sensation in New Zealand is the New World POD, which helps keeps food fresh for longer, and is available to collect in New World stores nationwide from early September. It is designed to help modern, environmentally-conscious individuals and families make the most of their fresh product and reduce their waste output.  Every time you shop at New World from September 3 to October 16, you can collect stickers with every $20 spend and redeem on four sizes of vacuum sealed food storage PODs. They’re shatter resistant and BPA-free. Collect them all and become a champion for loving your leftovers too!

Try this Vegetarian Bolognese recipe which uses whatever vegetables you have on hand to create a delicious sauce.

Dash of oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 capsicum, finely chopped
300g mixed vegetables, finely diced (e.g. carrot, parsnip, mushrooms, leek, celery)
2-4 cloves garlic, crushed
2 heaped teaspoons dried oregano
Salt and pepper
1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1 x 400g tin lentils, drained

Method

  • Heat oil in a pan and gently cook the onion until well browned, stirring regularly.
  • Add the capsicum and vegetables to the pan, continue cooking gently for 5 minutes, still stirring regularly.
  • Add the garlic and oregano, season with salt and pepper. Stir well and then add the tomatoes.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if it starts to stick.
  • Add the lentils, simmer for a further 5 minutes and serve with pasta.

Cooking Tips

  • You can add any cooked vegetables, baked beans or over ripe tomatoes.
  • This sauce goes well with pasta tubes such as rigatoni or shells, which hold the sauce better than spaghetti.
  • Transform leftovers into a Mexican chilli to top nachos, or add curry paste and serve with rice.
