Food waste is a major issue in New Zealand, with each Kiwi household throwing out approximately 70kg of edible food each year. This adds up to more than $500 per year, so it's about time we all did our bit to help reduce, ruse and recycle. Small changes can make a big difference.
One way of doing so is reducing or avoiding food waste altogether. The newest food storage sensation in New Zealand is the New World POD, which helps keeps food fresh for longer, and is available to collect in New World stores nationwide from early September. Ways to use the New World PODs and reduce food waste
- Keep your carrots fresh for longer by storing them in a paper towel-lined New World POD in the fridge.
- To keep your salad greens fresher for longer, store them in your New World POD with paper towels on top and keep refrigerated. Deli meat will also keep for longer in a New World POD.
- For your cheese, tightly wrap your hard cheese in its packaging, pop it in a New World POD and keep it in the fridge.
- Freeze leftover coconut milk in ice cube trays, then transfer to a New World POD and store in the freezer, ready to add to curries, soups and smoothies.
- Did you know, you can eat broccoli stalks too? Simply store them in a New World POD, ready to use chopped or grated, as a nutritious addition to your next meal!
- Leftover dinner? Pop into a New World POD and store in the fridge for a tasty lunch tomorrow.
- Prep meals on the weekend and store in New World PODs in the fridge, for quick and easy lunches and dinners throughout the week.
- Keep your feta fresh for longer. Place it in olive oil or a homemade brine (made by dissolving 1 tablespoon of salt in 1 cup of water) and pop it in your New World POD to keep it fresher for longer.
- Don’t eat your crusts? Here’s a thought - store them in your New World POD and pop them in the freezer, because they’re perfect for making breadcrumbs or croutons.

Try this Vegetarian Bolognese recipe which uses whatever vegetables you have on hand to create a delicious sauce.
Dash of oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 capsicum, finely chopped
300g mixed vegetables, finely diced (e.g. carrot, parsnip, mushrooms, leek, celery)
2-4 cloves garlic, crushed
2 heaped teaspoons dried oregano
Salt and pepper
1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1 x 400g tin lentils, drained
- Heat oil in a pan and gently cook the onion until well browned, stirring regularly.
- Add the capsicum and vegetables to the pan, continue cooking gently for 5 minutes, still stirring regularly.
- Add the garlic and oregano, season with salt and pepper. Stir well and then add the tomatoes.
- Bring to a gentle simmer, cover and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if it starts to stick.
- Add the lentils, simmer for a further 5 minutes and serve with pasta.
- You can add any cooked vegetables, baked beans or over ripe tomatoes.
- This sauce goes well with pasta tubes such as rigatoni or shells, which hold the sauce better than spaghetti.
- Transform leftovers into a Mexican chilli to top nachos, or add curry paste and serve with rice.
