As part of this year’s Bach of the Year Awards, three idyllic baches were awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronze crowns for their eco-friendly qualities. Take a sneak peek inside!
GOLD Winner: The Pavilion – Tryphena, Great Barrier Island
The Pavilion is the perfect bach for getting back in touch with nature. Set amongst the Great Barrier Island bush, this fully self-contained Tryphena pad runs completely on solar power and offers guests their own private walking trail to truly experience the nature surrounding them.
Guests can enjoy panoramic views of the Coromandel peninsula from the bach’s deck, before freshening up on the private outdoor shower deck under the hot water rain head.
Days can be spent walking to the nikau groves to watch the native wood pigeons and fantail or looking out for the shy morepork owl while waiting to watch the sunset. All followed by dinner courtesy of the resident Weber barbeque, using herbs from the property’s orchard for an uber organic summer meal.
SILVER Winner: Coromandel Eco Sanctuary – Coromandel Township, Coromandel
Set back from the road on a large 3/4 acre private site, Coromandel Eco Sanctuary lives up to its name by offering guests an ideal bach base to switch off from the hustle and bustle.
After enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the property’s elevated deck, guests can head to the secluded outdoor bath surrounded by beautifully tended gardens to soak away their troubles.
Alongside its impressive location and design, this bach provides provides pharmaceutical grade water through a filtration system and only uses 100 per cent natural cleaning products.
On top of this, a home ventilation system helps keep clean air for allergy sufferers. Guests are also encouraged to recycle and a bin is provided for food scraps which goes into the worm farm and compost bin for the organic vege garden and fruit trees.
BRONZE Winner: Tuki Views – Havelock North, Hastings District
A spectacular piece of Hawkes Bay, this new generation of bach is based amongst the rolling hills of Havelock North and was a dream property designed by the owner himself over the course of 10 years.
Tuki Views was designed around eco principals that would best take in the stunning Hastings views around it. As well as running only on tank water, the three offset curved roof sections were designed with passive heating in mind, making for cool summer days and warm cosy winter nights.
From this idyllic bach, guests can enjoy days out to the Craggy Range winery, Black Barn restaurant or explore Hawkes Bay’s sandy beaches and Waimarama Beach settlement just 25 minutes away, with its famous local fish and chip shop.
