The 2016 Festival of Transitional Architecture (FESTA) taking place in Christchurch this year will bursting with vibrant urban creativity this Labour Weekend
Urban creativity and regeneration are at the forefront of this year’s FESTA (Festival of Transitional Architecture) taking place in Christchurch over Labour Weekend. With the theme ‘We Have the Means,’ from October 21-24 FESTA will highlight resourcefulness – making the most of the means available to us, in terms of our people and reusable materials – with a myriad of activities in Christchurch city that are open to all.
Throughout Labour Weekend, visitors and city-goers alike can visit a village of temporary shelters (designed and fabricated from waste materials); have fun with hands-on activities for kids (such as creating ‘mutant monsters’ from the parts of old toys); and experience a pop-up restaurant in a bespoke pavilion all about embracing the full food system – from growing and picking to cooking, consuming and composting – as well a five course meal made from local, seasonable and sustainable fare.
On Saturday October 22, Christchurch’s biggest, most creative street party is taking place. FESTA’s headline event, Lean Means – a spectacular temporary city – takes over vacant sites in and around the Christchurch Art gallery, and explores the sustainable ways to regenerate Christchurch with a night of colour, light and people.
In an international collaboration involving Creative Director Jos de Krieger of Superuse Studios, and students from seven leading design and architecture schools from across Australasia, inner city spaces are transformed with imaginative installations fabricated from reused ‘waste’ materials. This city will be packed with food, music, performance, markets, a wearable art parade for kids, a night market and much more
