Best face masks and serums for winter

Best face masks for winter

As we move into the cooler months, low levels of humidity and abrasive winds can result in dry, flaky skin that nobody wants. Face masks and hydrating serums are a great way to give your skin that extra boost of hydration it needs.

It’s important to find a product that incorporates an effective natural moisturiser as an ingredient in order to hydrate your skin and benefit from the long-lasting results.

If you’re struggling to find time to give your skin the attention it deserves, try incorporating products into your daily routine. Pop a face mask on while cooking dinner or during your journaling time. For one hour a week, make time for a face mask. If you are really pressed for time, overnight masks can replace your nighttime moisturiser one to two times a week.

Here are our top picks to get rid of the dreaded ‘flakies’:

Biologi – Bf Hydration Serum

Biologi’s Dermal Specialist, Lucy Macdougald says a good daily hydration serum will provide some long lasting benefits to the skin compared to those temporary results you might get from a face mask. “We recommend using Biologi’s Bf Hydration Body Serum which can be used on the face and all over (including your hair). Containing 100% active ingredients from its Australian finger lime, it will hydrate, soothe and repair, leaving the skin feeling smooth and supple. Bf serum is also an ideal serum for anyone with sensitive, dry and irritated skin who is looking for a boost of hydration that lasts!”

By Nature – Hydrating and Firming Face Mask

The By Nature Hydrating and Firming Sheet Mask is sold in packs of five for an affordable price. Paraben-free and made in New Zealand, we love #keepingitlocal. Great for all skin types including dry, it hydrates, softens lines and opens pores. Key ingredients include collagen, Manuka honey, witch hazel, and aloe vera which all have nourishing properties. The mask is simple to use too.

Apply to a clean face, massage it onto the skin so it fits snug, peel off the outer layer, and relax for ten minutes. Remove and massage excess product into the skin.

The Herb Farm – Revitalising Face Mask

The Herb Farm Revitalising Face Mask is gentle and perfect for all skin types, especially dry and dull skin, and a bonus is this one is also New Zealand made. This clay-based mask is made from a combo of pink and white kaolin clay and will be sure to give your skin some TLC. The mask aims to hydrate, plump, and detoxify your skin from environmental pollutants. Packed with flaxseed oil powerful seaweed extract, there are some great nutrients and minerals for your skin in this tub.

Apply an even layer on a clean face, neck, and chest, and leave for ten minutes. Wipe off with warm water and a face cloth.

Karuna – Hydrating Face Mask

The Karuna Hydrating Face Mask is a sheet-style mask made with natural fibres from biodegradable wood pulp and has a pleasant toasted rice scent. Ultra-hydrating ingredients like sodium hyaluronate and sodium lactate will leave your skin feeling well-nourished. The special ingredient, Natto, derived from soybeans, also provides exfoliation and brightening powers for your face. Karuna recommends putting your face mask in the fridge a couple of hours before applying for an extra refreshing experience.

If you prefer a warm mask, Karuna says to place the mask (still in its packet) into a bowl of hot water for 3-5 minutes prior to use. To apply, gently unfold mask, apply cloth side to your face, remove the backing and adjust the slits in the mask for a perfect fit, wait 10-20 minutes, remove and allow excess product to absorb.

Tailor Skincare – Polish Mask and Scrub

The Tailor Skincare Polish is an all-in-one scrub and mask, perfect for extra dry skin. It provides a little extra than a regular mask, as the hydration comes first, then as you massage/rinse, the natural pumice works to exfoliate and remove flaky skin build-up. Natural hydration and clarification comes from bentonite clay, and wintergreen derived salicylic acid, to help keep the dryness at bay between uses. This product aims to draw out impurities and clear congestion.

If using as a scrub, apply to face and neck, and buff into skin gently. Rinse with a warm, damp face cloth.

For mask use, apply to your face and neck, being generous on extra oily/congested areas. Wait 15 minutes for the clay to draw out impurities. Remove with a warm, damp face cloth. You can also spot treat congested areas regularly.

The Body Shop – Hemp Overnight Nourishing Rescue Mask

If your skin is desperate for intense hydration and you are running low on time, The Body Shop Hemp Overnight Nourishing Rescue Mask will take care of it while you sleep. This creamy mask is made with hemp seed oil so your skin will be richly hydrated but not be left greasy. This mask’s goal is to have you wake up with super soft skin that stays hydrated for up to 72 hours.

Along with the restorative properties of hemp, this mask is also enriched with aloe vera for extra moisture. To use this mask, slather on a thick layer to your face and neck, and leave for 5-10 minutes. Massage into your skin, remove any surface excess with a tissue, and head to bed. Wash your skin normally when you wake up, and apply your skincare as normal.
