Eco-renovate your deck

Maximise your outdoor area with a splash of wood stain and paint

You will need:

  • Stiff broom and Resene Moss and Mould Killer (optional) or Resene Timber and Deck Wash
  • 1 litre Resene Quick Dry Waterborne primer undercoat
  • 10 litres Resene Woodsman Decking Stain CoolColour tinted to Resene Shadow Match
  • Lumbersider tinted to Resene Koru

Step one

If necessary, treat any moss and mould with Resene Moss and Mould Killer, then rinse. Scrub the deck’s entire surface with Resene Timber and Deck Wash and a stiff outdoor brush.

Step two

Brighten a worn back doorstep with a fresh coat of paint. Prepare the surface with a quick sand and cover with a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Prepare any other parts of the deck you wish to pain (such as handrails) in a similar way and allow to dry.

Step three

Coat the deck surface and rails with Reene Woodsman Decking Stain CoolColour. We chose the colour Resene Shadow Match. Dark colour absorbs a lot of light, placing significant stress on the coating, but the unique formulation of Resene’s CoolColour range allows these paints and stains to absorb light. By reflecting a large proportion of he heat falling on them, they stay cool and are more long-lasting.

Step four

Finish off any detail areas with a water-based top coat in a colour of your choice. We used Resene Koru for a warm shade of green.
