Fashion Revolution Week: Why we love WE-AR

Today kicks off Fashion Revolution Week for 2017, a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry. This week Good is celebrating fashion labels doing great things in this space, starting with fashion and yoga brand WE-AR.

Fashion should feel good. We love fashion but we don’t want our clothes to come at the cost of people or our planet. That’s the message of Fashion Revolution Week and New Zealand label WE-AR certainly ticks those boxes.

This beautiful brand is the brandchild of yoga teacher and designer Jyoti Morningstar who committed to being ethical and kind to the planet when she founded WE-AR in 2008.

Made in Bali from naturally dyed organic fibres including cotton and bamboo in Bali, WE-AR now has stores in Bali, Auckland and Wellington as well as on online store, and have proven eco-luxe is a thing, and a good thing too.

“As a lifelong yogi, I wanted to see what was possible if I designed a business from the ground up on the principles of non-violence, fairness and holistic sustainability,” says Morningstar.

WE-AR recently gained B Corp certification joining a growing community of more than 1,900 certified B Corp businesses worldwide working together towards a common goal of redefining success in business. Through the power of their collective voice, B Corps lead a global movement of people using business as a force for good.

With this certification, WE-AR has proven that they meet the highest of standards for social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.

“The path to B Corp certification was an affirming and inspiring experience for us,” says Morningstar. “We gained insight into how much we have already achieved with our efforts in ethics and sustainability over the years, and how much this has helped our team, our communities in Bali and New Zealand and in many small ways, the planet already … Being recognised and celebrated for the passion and hard work it’s taken, by an organisation as prestigious as B Corp is totally affirming and also a great honour. Our whole team feels empowered by the energy of this meaningful and change-making movement.”

To celebrate Fashion Revolution Week,

Good

is giving away one x WE-AR’s new hand-loomed, plant dye Infinity Scarf in Tea Rose, valued at $185. The scarf (pictured in the hero image of this article) is made from wild harvested cotton that is hand spun. The yarn is then dip dyed in steaming vats of pigment made from boiling various plant parts such as fruit skins and tree clippings. The vats are heated over fires outside and emit an incredible fragrance.

After dying, the threads are woven using traditional Indonesian Ikat techniques. This process keeps alive traditional women’s artisan crafts which keeps the oral history of women’s stories alive.

The water at the end of the process is treated in water hyacinth ponds, then runs through a wetland before entering back into the ‘subak’ system which are the small canals that lace through the wet rice agricultural system from Bali’s mountains to the sea.
