Former body builder opens vegan food truck in Woodend

New vegan food truck Planted is set to shake up the foodie scene in Christchurch. Read the story behind Planted and why they are choosing to balance purpose with profit.

Fuelled by research and a deeper understanding of the benefits of plant-based food, personal trainer and former bodybuilder Nolan McGaw, and registered nurse and surgical assistant Julz McGaw, were inspired to go vegan several years ago.

With backgrounds in health and wellbeing, the McGaws wanted to do better and move away from pushing high meat and dairy diets on their children and clients.

The idea for Planted was born, to encourage New Zealanders to incorporate plant-based food into their diets, see the benefits for themselves, and set the standard for vegan eateries.

“With Planted we’re aiming to teach people about the power of plant-based nutrition, all while showing them it can be easy, affordable and still delicious. Because we aim to show the cheap reality of buying locally and in season, we minimise how much profit goes back to us, and instead make sure we’re keeping our prices low,” says Nolan.

The inaugural Planted Menu

Experimenting with seasonal and organic produce, the McGaws have concocted a menu that not only highlights the best of vegan eating but is also affordable, with children’s meals available for $5 and full meals from $10-$15.

“The basic idea is that we can’t continue on like we are if we want our planet to survive. A plant-based diet is a win-win situation for everyone, including the animals we share our planet with. So now we want to promote our food to Kiwis across the country, and give people the tools to help them live longer, healthier”, says Nolan.
