Get your skin glowing again

Samantha Harris, Biologi Ambassador

There’s a lot more to beautiful skin than just the products you use. Environmental factors, diet and hormones are just some of the things that can affect the skin in different ways. Lucy Macdougald, Dermal Specialist at Biologi suggests looking at your skin from a holistic approach and gives us her quick fixes to give you your best skin yet.

GIVE YOU SKIN A BREAK

Our skin is a powerful organism that has the ability to regenerate itself. From time to time, consider giving your skin a break by scaling back the number of products you use. Our skin really only needs around 4 products to get the best results – a cleanser and exfoliant, a hard-working serum and a sunscreen. Avoid layering products with synthetic ingredients to not only reduce your toxic load but to give your skin a break! Also consider implementing make up free days into your routine whenever you can.

DON’T OVER EXFOLIATE

The first reaction for many people who are having a bad skin day is to reach for the exfoliant to scrub it all off. Whilst exfoliating is important, most skin only needs it about once a week. Over scrubbing can strip the skin of its natural oils which are there to help the skin regenerate itself. Removing your skin’s natural oils constantly can throw your pH balance out of whack and damage the outer layers of your skin’s surface.

DON’T PICK YOUR SKIN

Yes, we know this is a really obvious one that we’ve been told about countless times, but chances are you still do it on occasion. Whilst it can be very tempting, try to avoid it at all costs! Picking skin or squeezing pimples can push bacteria and pus into the skin which can result in more swelling, redness and even more pimples. It can also mean you’re left with nasty scabs which can cause permanent skin pits or scars.

HYDRATE INSIDE AND OUT

Ever noticed what your skin looks like when you’re feeling dehydrated? It’s likely that it appears like there are more fine lines and wrinkles, with an overall dull complexion. Ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day (especially prior to any big events that you want nice skin for) and apply a hydrating serum to your skin. We love Biologi’s Bd Face Luminosity Serum which treats a range of skincare conditions while working with the body’s natural hydrating processes to nourish cells from the inside out to create an even, luminous skin tone.

AVOID FRAGRANCES IN SKINCARE

Fragrance or parfum in skincare products are basically code word for chemicals. Brands do not need to disclose the ingredients used to make a fragrance, therefore, unless stated otherwise, it’s usually a mixture of chemical components. These chemicals can cause skin reactions or result in toxic build up over time.

APPLY AN OIL BEFORE BED

Many people avoid using skincare oils because it can make their skin appear too greasy. However, consider applying an oil to your skin before you go to bed for an extra hit of hydration. This will allow your skin to rehydrate overnight and you’ll wake up with a luminous complexion. And don’t worry if you naturally have oily skin – Oil-prone skin still needs hydration and funnily enough, oil can help the skin produce less oil over time. Basically, if a person with oily skin cleanses their skin regularly to remove excess oil, the skin will over compensate and start producing more oil. If you add a little bit of oil, the reverse can actually happen. We love Biologi’s new Br Organic Rosehip Oil which a pure oil that delivers a potent synergy of oil soluble actives required for skin health. It’s gentle enough to use on sensitised skin types, but powerful enough to achieve maximum results.

LOOK AT YOUR DIET

Good skin starts from the inside. Whilst using quality skincare products is important, what’s happening internally is just as important (if not more)! Poor diet and dehydration are big culprits when it comes to skin not looking its best. Just like a car reacts when fed the wrong fuel, your skin does too. Try to fuel your body with fresh and nutritional produce that will be kind to your skin and the rest of your body.
