Good Travels: a night at Gibbston Valley Lodge & Spa

BROUGHT TO YOU BY GOOD AND QUEENSTOWN NZ

Nestled among a striking Central Otago backdrop of sky and hills is Gibbston Valley Winery.

With so much to see and plenty of reasons to stay, you’ll forget that Queenstown is a short drive away – and you won’t need a reason to leave the property.

Gibbston Valley’s core pursuit is winemaking. Committed to grape-growing and winemaking practices that protect the environment, Gibbston Valley’s Home Block Vineyard was recently certified organic by BioGro New Zealand. Traditional and time-tested techniques are also employed, from handpicking whole bunches of grapes to macerating fruit by foot.

A regard for nature is felt throughout the estate, with a chef’s organic edible garden, happy bees cross-pollinating the garden and vines, and designated areas for skinks and geckos to frolic in a human-free habitat. The stream that runs through the property originates from the mountains, and there’s an array of solar panels that are both functional and pleasing to see. Flower arrangements are sourced onsite which adds to the inviting ambience of this beautiful setting.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything here. The lodge bedding is made from recycled plastic bottles, and the hypoallergenic and biodegradable soap in the bathrooms is sourced locally from Queenstown Soap Co

Importantly, Gibbston Valley’s eco-minded residence looks out for your wellbeing. It will have you enthralled with its expansive valley views and impeccable decor.

There are plenty of activities on offer to break up your day: visit the wine cave, sample the Cheesery & Deli’s delights, take a walk among the vineyards or along the river, or chill and enjoy a glass of wine at sunset around the fire pit. There’s even a Movie Theatre – perfect for a private viewing of your chosen blockbuster accompanied with your favourite Gibbston Valley drop.

You can also hire a Gibbston Valley e-bike and embark on a tasting adventure via the Gibbston River Trail. Glide over bubbling streams past lavender bushes, and stop at the lookouts to glimpse the astonishingly turquoise blue of the Kawarau River.

For a more low-key affair, try a facial tailored to your skin’s needs at the spa, or go for a vinotherapy treatment, which uses different grape and vine parts to benefit the skin. Afterwards, soak in one of two outdoor hot tubs and relax in the sauna.

When you’ve worked up an appetite, choose between lunch at the exquisite Gibbston Valley Winery Restaurant or a vintner’s platter and wine combination at the Cellar Door. The former’s seasonal menu features ingredients that reflect local flavours expertly matched with wines – and the service is second to none.

For those inspired to make this spot their permanent home, the upcoming Gibbston Valley Resort development could make that dream a reality. Built on the ecological ethos of ‘Green Architecture’ and responsible development, the Gibbston Valley Resort will offer families a little piece of paradise for future generations to preserve. All building materials, architecture, and landscape reflect a sustainable approach. The residences will incorporate locally sourced schist and a natural colour palette to complement the gorgeous landscape’s rugged setting.
