How can we support the vulnerable through Covid-19?

The nation-wide lockdown has affected how we can help others, resulting in an increased demand for essential services like homeless shelters and Women’s Refuge.

Homeless Shelters

Homeless shelters have had to change how they operate due to restrictions on gatherings and social distancing. At present, the public is unable to drop off food, toiletries, and other necessities. You also can’t walk-in to volunteer your time.

However, you can support your local shelter with an online donation. Here are website links to the following shelters in main New Zealand cities:

Women’s Refuge

Women’s Refuge is an essential service and is operational during the lockdown. Where possible they are lessening face to face contact, and are utilising alternative accommodation options to maintain isolation procedures.

Many women and children are living with family violence and are at higher risk during the lockdown. They may be further isolated from their support network, and their abuser may monitor their conversations and activities.

If you are concerned about someone you know, Women’s Refuge provides guidance on how you can help them to feel less isolated. You can also encourage them to contact Women’s Refuge. There are several ways to do this, including messaging their Facebook page or ringing 0800REFUGE. You can also make a donation to the refuge here.
