New Zealand Fashion Week preview

What brands are showing and why we care

New Zealand Fashion Week kicks off on August 22 and Good will be there on the ground to seek out what is happening in the ethical and conscious-consumer space.

Harman Grubisa have secured the prime opening position as official 2016 Mercedes-Benz Presents designer of the year. The duo Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubisa will present their autumn/winter 2017 collection on Monday night, following the official opening function at the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre, Auckland.

What is cool about Harman Grubisa is that it is made in New Zealand and is one of the first New Zealand labels to be nominated for the International Woolmark Prize. Their designs are also elegant and timeless, appealing to women who stand for ethically produced, quality garments.

Good is also excited to see Federation designed by Jenny Joblin return to NZFW stage. Joblin is also a talented artist and Good featured her work in Jan/Feb 2016 issue. Her winter range ‘Birds versus Bees’ is said to have “emerged from the depths of Joblin’s creative daydreams and edgy illustrations”. Federation last appeared on the NZFW runway in 2009 and it’s great that they are back.

Other shows we are looking forward to in next week’s line-up include Hailwood (Child Labor Free accredited manufacturing); Eugenie (units are kept deliberately low and produced in ethically sound conditions); Wynn Hamlyn (combines classical tailoring with youthful joy); Stolen Girlfriends Club (who have begun the Child Labor Free accreditation process) and made in New Zealand designers Lela Jacobs; Maaike, Jimmy D, Lucilla Gray; Yu Mei; Penny Sage; Twenty-Seven Names and Knuefermann to name a few! Swimwear designer Carena West has also made a social turn, withdrawing from manufacturing in China in favour of New Zealand.

The NZ Fashion Weekend kicks off on August 28-28, and is your chance to experience the thrilling buzz and energy of New Zealand Fashion week. The weekend features stunning in-season runway shows (including Good‘s sister publication New Zealand Weddings Magazine Show on Sunday August 28), seminars, beauty hubs, discounted shopping and stylish bars to enjoy.
