Our favourite home workouts

Being in lockdown is already making us sluggish, unmotivated and emotionally confused. While exercise is a great way to get our endorphins pumping, it’s also difficult to maintain while isolating. We’ve put together our favourite workout apps so you can exercise from the safety of your own driveway, garage, bedroom or living room. And remember, it’s not about being an athlete, or coming out the other side of the lockdown ten kilos lighter. It’s about keeping your mental health in check and maintaining energy levels!

Nike Training Club

Good old Nike has come through during these tough times. Although the app has been around a while, it’s even more popular globally due to COVID-19 related lockdowns.

Nike’s free app offers a mix of equipment-based workouts and ones that simply require your body weight. It’s great for all fitness levels and workout preferences.

Never Stop Dancing

Founder and Director Virginia Keast started her business Never Stop Dancing after years of working as a lawyer and having a family. Virginia offers face to face dance classes for all abilities that include active and fun dance moves. With Covid-19 forcing her to shut down classes temporarily, she’s now offering classes via her YouTube channel.

Find fun, de-stressing dance videos to do alone or with your friends over video chat on her channel here.

Les Mills On Demand

The Les Mills On Demand app is a tried and trusted option. It includes over 800 videos based on Les Mills’ famous classes offered around the world. Les Mills On Demand is website and app-based making it user friendly.

There are a range of classes suitable for body weight only, but some classes require basic home gym equipment or improvisation. There’s even a mindfulness & meditation section to wind down to after an intense day.

If you’re feeling fancy, you can even order yourself some official Les Mills equipment found in Les Mills gyms!

A membership for Les Mills On Demand will cost you $30 a month. If you’re already a club member in New Zealand, you can sign up to a free trial for 60 days.

Adidas Runtastic

Adidas has stepped up its game by offering a free 90-day premium membership to their workout app. With workouts that include strength training and cardio, you will be set to get moving in your home. There are also options to join in challenges with a global community. You can select workouts that will fit into your schedule with no equipment needed.

Aaptiv

This app has a huge variety of choices over others! There is no need to have your screen on or open as all the workouts are voice-guided.

The addition of guided sleep meditations can help you get a good night’s rest which is imperative to a balanced life and maintaining your workout schedule.

Aaptiv is USD$15 a month or USD$100 per year, which is great value for money if you need extra motivation and support year-round.
