Take a virtual tropical break to New Caledonia

With international borders still closed, you’ll easily be forgiven for indulging in a little island dreaming. New Caledonia Tourism has launched a series of relaxing videos as part of its ‘New Cal Uploading…’ campaign, to help give us a taste of island life while travel isn’t possible. Available on a virtual hub on the tourism authority’s website, you can do yoga surrounded by tropical fish, zone out to views of a lush nature reserve or chill to scenes of the glistening lagoon. This is in addition to enjoying a range of recipes inspired by the island’s tropical flavours, taking a 360 degree tour of its natural landscapes or downloading dreamy, beachy backgrounds for your phone, computer or next Zoom call.

Yoga in the Aquarium des lagons

Situated in capital city, Noumea, along Anse Vata, one of the city’s main beaches, the Aquarium des lagoons (loosely translated as the Aquarium of the lagoons) is a showcase of…well, New Cal’s stunning lagoons! And stunning they are; six parts of New Cal’s lagoons were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008 for their beauty and biodiversity. Visitors to the Aquarium – both young and old – will get a kick out of seeing tropical fish and other marine species up close, while learning about the lagoon’s ecosystems and the importance of protecting the environment.

This 10-minute yoga session from local instructor Suzel is filmed in the aquarium to a backdrop of tropical fish. And while it sounds like a quirky experience, the sight of the fish bubbling along while you’re pulling out your best warrior pose is surprisingly relaxing.

Zone out in a lush nature reserve

This the relaxation video you never knew you needed. Filmed by drone over the Parc des Grandes Fougeres (which translates to Park of the Giant Ferns), the sight of ferns rustling in the wind appears to tickle your eyes while soothing music lulls you into a state of Zen. The video also shows a different side to New Caledonia, one that’s not often associated with the destination. While many people think of white sand beaches and palm trees when they think of New Cal, it’s actually home to lush forests and parks, desert-like landscapes and rural, outback areas. Dare you to explore!

Chill out to New Cal’s blue lagoons

New Caledonia’s lagoons are brimming with fish, dolphins, rays, coral, turtles and many other tropical species – a snorkeller’s delight! Also filmed by drone, this video takes you over New Cal’s lagoons, revealing their 50 shades of blue, coral formations and frolicking dolphins and rays. While set to a relaxing soundtrack, it’s hard to know what’s more soothing – that or watching the animals play! Over to you to decide.
