Ethical fashion company WE-AR has just released an ethically sourced organic cashmere line from Nepal and we love it

Snuggling into a WE-AR cashmere jumper knowing it’s made from ethically sourced organic cashmere from Nepal is a wonderful feeling.
Not only does it feel silky soft against the skin but knowing its provenance provides extra warm fuzzies.
Sourcing this precious fibre for WE-AR’s winter collections has been a three year journey for WE-AR founder Jyoti Morningstar. “We’ve had trouble finding a supplier that we have felt comfortable with so it’s taken until now to make it happen,” she explains.
That changed when she discovered an organic cashmere supplier in Nepal and in November 2017 Morningstar travelled to Nepal and set up camp in the factory so that she could get to know all the processes, meet all the workers and make sure it was as good as it looked on paper.
“Shakti [the factory owner] is crazy passionate about cashmere, it’s his whole life, so from the beginning we were both coming from a place of passion for creating the product but I wanted to go there and spend time in the factory and really experience what the environment was like. It’s the sort of thing that you can’t feel from a list of certifications,” Morningstar says. “You have to go and live there and be in it. And that’s how we make our clothes in Bali. We know everybody who is doing the cut and sew, we know everybody who is working on it.”
Being able to offer cashmere as part of WE-AR’s autumn/winter 2018 collection – beautiful jumpers, scarves and beanies to name just a few must-have items – completes the ethical fashion label’s offering, which up until now has mostly been produced in Bali.
“We are a New Zealand-based brand and it’s cold here,” says Morningstar. “The clothes we are able to make through our Bali workshops are essentially summer clothes so we haven’t been able to offer anything, up until now that is, that is truly wintery.”
As well as being B-CORP certified, WE-Ar are a member of the Sustainable Business Network, Conscious Consumers and a proud Living Wage employer. we-ar.com
